Change

We need change. 6 days to go before we find out if positive constructive change will happen.

It's funny, even though I've been bad about picking up the phone and calling friends on the east coast lately, we still seem to come together in times like this. For better or worse, the state of the union has pulled us together again if only to worry about what the future holds. Thank you KT for forwarding the below quote.....I find it powerful on many levels. I hope others do as well.

"I think he is a transformational figure. He is a new generation coming into the world--onto the world stage, onto the American stage, and for that reason I'll be voting for Senator Barack Obama."

8

Yup, it's been 8 years since Alan and I tied the knot.

Twas a chilly day in York Harbor, Maine. About 135 people. We had three seasons. When people arrived it was 82 degrees and some had fun on the seashore. Soon after, they admired the changing leaves of the season. By the day after our wedding, they were searching for mittens to cut the cold from the first flurries of the year.

All of you who read the blog were actually in the wedding-Liisa, Jenny, Katie, Kim. I'd like to pause to say that I feel so fortunate to have everyone in my life today. I feel so fortunate to still love the person I married as much today as I did then. Sure, there are ups and downs but never do I doubt that Alan is the one for me.

Tonight we celebrated by spending a little romantic time together at a restaurant in the Marina - Isla. It was lovely.

Here's a toast to a long marriage, good family and many years of friendship, health and prosperity.

First sleepaway sleepover

Our little girl is growing up! We went to dinner at our friend's Zoe and James last night. Their daughter Brianna and Kiira were in the same preschool. Well, besides a delicious gourmet Thai dinner that Zoe cooked, the kids has a blast. Kiira begged for a sleepover that night. So, we ended up leaving her there! Her first sleepover away from home.

The report - GOOD! No sad phone call in the middle of the night. No waking up screaming for mama. I think the truth of the matter is, Kiira likes sleeping in a room with someone else. She just gets lonely. She loves sleeping in our room and on more than one occasion has said they wished she had a TV in her room. The one time I tried to have Evan sleep in her room, well, it just didn't work out. Kiira stated that she thought she would like it when Evan had real words. Fair enough as he did a good deal of crying the night we tried to put them together and while poor Kiira tried to console him, she just couldn't understand what he needed.

Wow - 5 yrs old and her first sleepover away from home. Yup - she's growing up.

All worked up

Okay - I'm sitting here all worked up. Kiira has ballet at Roco Dance on Fridays. Her teacher is wonderful. Kind, engaging, and most of all - talented. The kids are learning real ballet. They do a few things at the bar as well as playful excercises. Kiira seems to really like it. She's been taking here since she was about 3 yrs old.

Why am I all worked up you ask? The owner, Annie, is a royal bitch. Yes, I do not throw that term around lightly but if I could bring myself to call her something stronger, I would. I really, really would. Can I just say - there is always something. Ok, some history....Starting two recitals ago, she brought us parents into the lobby during the tech rehearsal. Mind you she had made it a BIG deal that we couldn't take photos during the performance so tech was the only time to do this. And yet, when does she choose to inform us that 1. Our children could not come sit with us after their performance (we had all already purchased $20 tickets for them to do so) and 2. This would be the last performance for this age group b/c it just "stressed the kids out too much" (her projecting, clearly)? Right when OUR CHILDREN ARE ON STAGE PRACTICING naturally. Yes, the only time we have been given to take photos/videos of them. More than just a few of us were pissed off by EVERYTHING she had to say. And not just what but HOW. She just exudes stress. Take a chill pill lady.

So what happened this week you ask. Well, the passive aggressive you know what just continues to treat us like we don't matter. Today we noticed that the benches we sit on to wait for the kids (it's a 45 min class) were gone. Hmm...I joke with the teacher, "is someone trying to tell us something?" She shrugs and smiles, clearly not wanting to be the one to get into the politics of something a-brewing. Five minutes later, the owner comes by and shuts the curtain in front of the one door we parents have to see our kids. Doesn't say a word, just shuts it. Okay then, we parents give each other looks.....five minutes later she comes up and says that we need to keep our voices down when the door is open, "it's very distracting for the kids." Fair enough. I ask, is there somewhere we can watch them? Mind you the entire studio is glass windows which she has put curtains on. Perhaps even one of them could be pulled back a little? No she replies, there is not. "Can the little kids switch studios to the one with the waiting room" I ask. No, she replies. Mind you, most of us waiting have younger siblings that have to wait with us. Come rainy season I'm wondering how everyone is going to love waiting in the rain? Again she replies, they are just not set up with a waiting area. So, I reply with a cold look in my eye - "I guess that's something for us to consider next time we go to sign up."
I'm a pretty laid back person but god this woman gets under my skin. She just does NOT seem to want our business. We have 45 min to wait for our kids. Not really long enough to go anywhere but she doesn't seem to want us there.

This is Kiira's last session at this studio. Although she loves it, I really in good conscience will not give this woman our business. I've talked to my friend Nancy whose daughter takes ballet/tap at Happy Feet. She said she's heard many of the moms talking there about the fact that they couldn't deal with Annie at Roco anymore and that's why they switched. Roco is probably keeping Happy Feet in business. Kiira will be sad not to do the big performance on stage but I'm hoping I can replace the disappointment by some excitement for tap dancing. Keep your fingers crossed. It's a shame the innocent little ones suffer in the end for this woman's bitchiness. Yeah, there's that word again but...if the ballet slipper fits.....

Pumpkins x2

Well, this is our third annual trip to the Petaluma pumpkin patch. It is only a 40 min drive and we are rewarded with a vast bounty of fun things to do. To start with, you could bounce on the bouncies until your brains popped out of your ears. You could go on a hay ride. You could stick your head through a funny person's body. You could see a cow get milked, you could pick wildflowers, you could take a train ride, you could go through the corn maze, you could go through the haybale maze or you could just go ahead and do the old fashioned thing of pick a pumpkin. Talk about a day of entertainment. Worth a small child's skipped nap. And THAT my friends says it all b/c those of you who know me know the kind of crazy mom I am about NOT skipping naps.

Like mother like daughter

So, Kiira and I, Nancy and June and Bethany went to see Disney on Ice this past Saturday. As you can see by the look below, she was enthralled at first, she'd never seen the likes of this. The overall score was that although Kiira enjoyed it, and enjoyed spending time with her friend, it was not something she'd do again. "Why?", I asked her. She replied, "It was kind of scarey."

Well, to that I had to reply, "yes, parts of it were scarey." Now mind you I couldn't even identify all the stories that came out because my mom cut me off of Disney movies when I was a mere 7 yr old tot. I think she got tired of picking up the pieces when I fell apart at the scarey, sad, or just unsettling parts that we forget Disney has in a large part of their movies (Bambi anyone?). Again, I was a sensitive kid and....like mother like daughter.

Nuthin' says fall like a few pumpkins

The time has come. We let the kids loose amongst the pumpkins to let them to their search of the perfect one. Will it be orange, will it be white? Will it be green, small or large? Will it have bumps on it? Will it have a stem? So many choices...so many choices.....

Fall is in the air

Leaves have begun to fall. Every few days we have a crispness in the air. It's dark when we get up and dark when we are going to bed. Yes, fall is certainly upon us.

A chip off the 'ole block

It is easy to get caught up in the day and evening and not take time out to just sit. I am trying to get better at that. One of the ways Alan likes to decompress at the end of the day is to play his guitar. Inevitably, Evan likes to join in too. Not always relaxing at the end of the day to have the family (LOUD) band, but fun none the less.

Uncle Sam

Ha! Ha! You may be thinking I'll be tackling a story about our country again but no, a much lighter happier story to tell. Literally, Uncle Sam came out for a visit (Alan's brother) and we got to spend some quality time with him. He even came out to the barn to see Kiira ride. Which she loved of course. She really rises to the occasion when someone watches and loves to show off. On this particular day, we tacked up Kisses, one of the ponies, and she rode around bareback so Uncle Sam could see her.

19 days to go

All I can say is....Evan has been turned down for health coverage. Yes, that's right, my sweet 2 yr old boy. If McCain becomes president, Evan will get $5000 and no health coverage. That's right, he just WON'T be able to get it. Nor will anyone who has ever had a simple ear infection, an ER visit (for sometimes nothing but still - YOU WENT!!! The health insurance companies will fabricate something to deny you....that's what they've done with Alan AND Evan - AND I'VE APPEALLED THEIR VERDICT TO NO AVAIL) or probably a simple urinary tract infection. People, read between the lines.

Palin still scares the living you know what out of me.....as does she others per this video....

Beautiful days, blustery nights

The days have been hot, but come 6 or 7 pm, it is cold, cold, cold! Alan was out of town travelling so the kids and I decided to light a fire and have a carpet picnic. I find the change of setting from the table also peaks their eating interest and I can get them to eat a little more. It was cozy and we had fun. We have to lock Rennie in the bedroom though otherwise HE has a little TOO much fun!

Mmm....picnic dinner by the fire.

Kiira commandeered the camera for a few pumpkin/fire shots.

It starts early

So the other day, Kiira had her friend Christian over. He is an extremely sweet boy that Kiira went to preschool with. His dad also happens to be one of the firefighters that gave us the tour at the firehouse the other day.

Anyway, one of the many reasons I like Christian is because he is so cute with his girl-friends. He hugs them and gives them kisses.

Well, Kiira doesn't very often have playdates with boys and it took them a little while to find their footing. With her girl friends, they play dress up, baby, family, tea party etc. While they were finding their way in their playdate, Kiira asked Christian,

"Will you be my husband?" Christian's reply, "Let's just be friends and I'll leave in the morning." Is that priceless or what? He's 5 yrs old. Is it attached to the Y chromosome or what?

Firehouse tour

Kiira's kindergarten class went on a field trip to the Tiburon firehouse yesterday. I was a chaperone. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and even learned a few things about what to do in a fire.

Kiira and her new school chum Ella in "their room"....crawling towards the door to feel the bottom with the BACK of their hand to see if it's hot

Kiira got to spray the firehose!

Kiira and Ella - so happy to be together

Gingrich vs. Reich

Well, Nancy and I got tickets to the Marin Speaker Series and one of the tickets was to see a debate between Newt Gingrich and Robert Reich. One, decidedly Republican and one, decidedly, Democrat. I was expecting much more sparring but it was quite civilized.

Reich was actually REALLY funny and Gingrich was much nicer and open than I expected. Although I think I enjoyed hearing Reich speak more, I think alot of that had to do with the fact that he is an economist. With that came alot of statistics which I think I overall respond well to. Newt's background is history and while I found this fascinating at times, it didn't give me the "hmmmm...." moments that Reich did.

In sum, Reich was for regulation and bottom up economic plans. Big surprise there. Newt surprised me by saying that he thought that the current Secretary of the Treasury should resign bc he is in WAY over his head. He also surprised me with a few of his ideas which revolved around spending money on health care reform - specifically preventative care and research. Something that our country desperately needs.

I think Newt realized that he couldn't win in the Marin Democratic crowd and decided to preach on what he knew we all would like. Overall, an enjoyable night I have to say.

Tick tock...tick tock....that of course is the time running out for America to wise up and vote Obama.
